Spring in Seville - a Spanish celebration
Submitted By David Sloss
On Sunday, March 15th, the Mercedes showroom at Fletcher Jones Motorcars will be transformed into an elegant Spanish villa, where patrons will enjoy wine and champagne, great singing by Fremont Opera stars, an authentic Spanish dinner by Gael Stewart, and dance music by The Nichols Party Band. Celebrated auctioneer Frank Bizzarro will preside over an exciting live auction. On display will be a new E-class Mercedes, which one of the lucky auction winners will drive for a week.
Two of Fremont Opera's outstanding singers will be on hand for a mini-concert of famous arias and duets from The Barber of Seville, Don Giovanni, and Carmen. Baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, who starred as Figaro in Fremont Opera's recent Barber of Seville, has appeared in many roles at San Francisco Opera. He was in the original cast of Baz Luhrmann's La Boh¸me on Broadway, and received a 2004 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award for his work in the Luhrmann production in Los Angeles. He has also appeared with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony, and made his debut with New York City Opera last year.
Soprano Heidi Moss is a veteran of many performances with the San Francisco Opera Center, and most recently appeared in the premiere of Gordon Getty's new opera Usher House. She was also a recent finalist in the 2008 KDFC's Classical Star Search, which won her a concert appearance with renowned pianist Lang Lang. She has appeared in opera roles with West Bay Opera, Pocket Opera, Livermore Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Opera Memphis, and DiCapo Opera Theater. In concert she has performed with the Fremont Symphony, Oakland Symphony, and Sacramento Choral Society. She is a former New York District winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Auctioneer Frank Bizzarro, whose work with hundreds of non-profit organizations since 1984 has been featured in national magazines and on television, will preside over an exciting live auction. Featured auction items include "Drive an E-class Mercedes for a Week"; a chance to join Fremont Opera's David and Barbara Sloss in box seats at San Francisco Opera with a pre-show brunch and private opera preview; cruises; gourmet dinners; and a priceless opportunity to appear on stage in Fremont Opera's next production.
After the auction, the Nichols Party Band will take over. The band features San Francisco-based musicians Jim and Morning Nichols, whose local appearances have included the Black & White Ball, Pacifica Fog Fest, and the Mark Hopkins Hotel. They have opened for Johnny Mathis, Maria Muldaur, Chet Atkins, the Beach Boys and the Smothers Brothers. Jim has appeared at Carnegie Hall and on the Tonight Show, and the Nichols have six CD's to their credit. Their wide repertoire covers the 1930's to the present, and includes Jazz, R&B, Motown, Swing, Big Band, Latin, 60's, 70's, 80's and rock.
All proceeds from Spring in Seville will support Fremont Opera's forthcoming Opera Evening with the Fremont Symphony next September, and a new production of Verdi's La Traviata in 2010.
