James Logan High School was well represented in the North Coast Section (NCS) boys wrestling tournament last weekend by two NCS champions and three of their teammates who, by virtue of finishing among the final four in their weight classes, will advance to the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.
In the 125-pound category, Logan's Danny Mai, who finished in eighth place last year, came in as the #3 seed and upset top seed Anthony Thurgood of Liberty High School, 6-4, in the tournament final. His teammate Lawrence Blanco, who was last year's 103-pound champion, repeated his feat in the 112-pound weight class, beating Evan Murden of Sonoma High School, 9-2.
Also representing the Colts in the state finals are 103-pound runner-up, Kristian Blanco, who was pinned in the tournament final by De La Salle's Vinny Moita; 119-pounder Eric Perez, who won his third place match 5-4 over Granada's Zach Waldren; and Kalifitoni Pole (285 pounds), who was pinned by Nick Pica (Concord) in the finals.
Mission San Jose will be represented in Bakersfield by Jose Ruvalcaba (145), as will Newark Memorial's Greig O'Connor (287).
And for the NCS wrestling meet for the girls at J.F.K. High on Saturday, Feb. 28, Newark Memorial's Lady Cougars captured first place with 139.5 points.
Thuy Tran (114), Katie Burdick (151) and Alyssa Hess (154) all claimed NCS individual title's in their respective weight classes; freshman Sonja Croce (146) took second; and Justine Sanchez took third.
