New City website
By Dustin Findley
Information Services staff for Milpitas reported about the city website redesign to the February 17 Council. Marion said that city staff has been working on the new webste for several months now.
"We are currently targeting March 1 as our go live date" Bill Marion, Information Services Director, told city council.
Since the city website's original inception in 2001 staff has added much content to the site, making little structural changes or redesigns. As a result of this information being added staff received feedback about the difficulty in finding and reading information and the cluttering of pages.
The project mission was to provide visitors to the city website the information they need in a straightforward and friendly manner. Project goals stemming from this mission include making the website customer, rather than department driven, free of clutter, using the new city logo, maintaining the same look and feel throughout the website, incorporate the email delivery system from Govdelivery, Inc., and utilize technology and design methods for more efficient site maintenance.
Govdelivery provides, for residents who sign up for the service, the ability to mark a page and receive email notification with every update of that particular page.
Brief statistics include 1.2 million webpage hits to the city website per month, 100,000 visits per month, and more than 3,000 items were created, moved or updated for the new website, all while maintaining the original site.
Many pages of information have been compiled together for easy navigation.
