Meet the author

By Meenu Gupta

The Milpitas Library group has had famous authors attend their book group. Laurie King, Khaled Hosseini, Kate Moses, Susan Straight, Bo Caldwell, Asher Witherow, Elizabeth Rosner and Mildred Kalish have all been guests of the group. Now the group is hosting the author talk and book signing of Brian Copeland, Elizabeth McKenzie, Barbara Quick, Meg Waite Clayton and C. W. Gortner.

"As part of the Silicon Valley Reads program, Brian Copeland will be visiting us to perform from and to discuss his book Not a Genuine Black Man: My Life as an Outsider" said Terye Balogh, Adult Librarian. The book details his experiences growing up as a black person in an all-white suburb in San Leandro.

Copeland will read and perform from his book for about 40 minutes, take questions from the audience and will then sign copies of his book, available for purchase. "We're very excited about having Brian Copeland speak on February 25" Balogh said. "I've seen him at the Book Group Expo and he's a very dynamic speaker" Balogh continued. The program is being put together by the Silicon Valley Reads program, and they have been handling all of the events for Mr. Copeland. This event is free and open to the public.

The Milpitas Library Book Group started in 1999, led by adult librarian Martha Kruger. "Ms. Kruger retired in 2004 and I took over the group then. We currently have over 25 members in our group. Such a large book group does present some challenges of equal time for everyone to speak, but I am very proud to say that the long standing members have always been very gracious and welcoming to new members and have encouraged the new faces to share their thoughts during our discussion," said Balogh.

You need not be a resident to attend, all are welcome to attend. The only rules of attendance are that you enjoy yourself, and respect the viewpoints of all in the group. "I don't require the members to finish the book, and I certainly don't want them to feel as if they have to like the book either. Our group has always enjoyed lively and engaging discussions of our books" said Balogh.

The book group is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Milpitas Library. They purchase the books from an independent bookseller, Books Inc. "The staff at Books Inc. has been fantastic, not only do we enjoy a very nice discount from them, but they also provide staff for our author events, so that people may purchase the book, and have it signed by the author. We would not be getting the caliber of authors that we've had without their tremendous help" she added.

The books are then shared by other library book groups. Those not used are sent on to the literacy program, Vision Literacy, that provides innovative literacy services for adults. For more information please contact Terye Balogh at tbalogh@library.sccgov.org or call (408) 262-1171 x 3615.
