InfoBrain: Newark Library Promotes Mental and Social Health
Newark Library's five-month BeHealthy5 continues in February with a focus on mental health. This month's checklist offers social, physical, mental, spiritual and nutritional activities that promote brain health. According to clinical neuropsychologist and surgeon Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a balance of such activities creates the novel, complex and enriched environment needed to develop new brain cells and connections, reducing the risk of dementia in later life.
There's still time to complete 12 activities from the Checklist for Mental Health, fuel your brain and win a prize and a grand prize entry for a $15 gift certificate to Raley's or Safeway donated by the Newark Library League or coffee beans donated by Newpark Mall's Starbucks staff. Sign up at Information Desk at Newark Library or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The last program in the mental health rotation is Tame Your Tech, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 28. Volunteers will help people master their personal gadgets such as cell phones, digital cameras and laptops. Bring your gadget (and its manual, if you have it) to learn to program and use it. Register at the Information Desk or by email.
Social health is the featured topic for BeHealthy5 in March. Since relationships are essential to maintaining mental, physical, spiritual and even financial health, people can choose activities that help them connect, reach out, play, give, learn or join with others. Newark Library will continue to offer board games and a community jigsaw puzzle for social interaction. Library programs that promote social health will be offered on Saturday afternoons. Registration is required. Sign up for any or all at the Information Desk at Newark Library or by e-mailing email@example.com.
On March 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., lace up your bowling shoes and step onto the virtual parquet floor to experience the fun and charm of the videogame Wii Bowling. Socialize and meet new people while you play.
Start organizing your photographs and mementos as you learn the art of scrapbooking on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. Bring five to eight photos and your imagination. Other materials will be supplied.
Learn how to reach out to the world with a personal blog on Saturday, March 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. Brian Castagne teaches a low-stress, high-technology workshop about how to create a blog, adjust layout, make text entries, import photos and videos, link to Internet resources, and customize administrative settings.
The month ends with Jim Spillane's workshop, Seven Secrets to Initiating a Positive Relationship on Saturday, March 28 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Have fun while learning how to meet that special someone.
Newark Library, a branch of Alameda County Library, is located at 6300 Civic Terrace Avenue. BeHealthy5, which continues through May, is funded by through the California State Library.
