Fremont Christian girls win BCL title
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Bay Counties League (BCL) boys and girls basketball tournaments took place at Emery High School (regular season champs) last week. Both Fremont Christian teams made it to the finals, but only the girls were able to come away with a championship.
On Tuesday, #2 Fremont Christian girls advanced to the final on Thursday, Feb. 19, with a 52-40 victory over #3 California School for the Deaf. Seniors Katie Hayes and Kat Sloma led the way for F.C. with 10 points each.
For CSD, Arica Jones was stellar in the loss, scoring 30 points and grabbing 10 points, while being named to the All Tournament Team.
Fremont Christian's boys team, also seeded No. 2, advanced to play No. 1 Emery with a 51-38 win over #3 CSD. Senior captain Tony Husary led the way with 24 points. Sophomore sensation Jeremiah Herzog netted 18 in the win, while junior Jericho Herzog pulled down 13 boards.
Fremont Christian basketball was able to leave Emery High on Thursday night, Feb. 19, with moderate success, as the girls were able to win, while the boys fell.
The boys took to the court looking to knock off the top-seeded BCL team, Emery, and advance to a winner-take-all game on Saturday, Feb. 21. The boys were led by sophomore stud, Jeremiah Herzog, who netted 16 points. Team captain, Tony Husary, contributed 13 points.
However, the two couldn't lead their team to victory. Emery proved to be too much for FC, and won by 10, 54-44. Junior Jericho Herzog pulled down 15 rebounds in the losing effort.
Husary and Jeremiah Herzog were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Husary had 37 points in FC's two games; Herzog tallied 34.
Meanwhile, the girls were able to see another day. They took down the top-seeded Emery in the early game of the day, 42-35.
After a sluggish first half, where the Lady Warriors scored 12 points with consecutive six-point quarters -- although the defense only allowed 14 points -- they exploded for 19 third-quarter points, which rode them to victory.
Fremont Christian had to defeat No. 1 Emery one more time, as the top-seeded team in the tourney needs to be defeated twice before elimination.
That do-or-die game took place on Saturday, Feb. 21. It was a tight game throughout, but led by Kemana Otosi, the Lady Warriors of Fremont Christian were able to pull off the upset victory, 41-40, and advance to the NCS tournament.
Otosi tossed in eight points (37 for the tournament) and pull down 17 boards (39 for the three-game stretch) en route to being names the tournament's MVP.
Fremont Christian received a #4 seed in Division VI of the NCS tournament and awaits the winner of St. Bernard Catholic and Contra Costa Christian. The game will be Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 on the Fremont Christian court.
