Surfin' Safari for education

Submitted By Nina Moore

It is once again time for the Fremont Education Foundation's (FEF) annual Excellence in Education Gala, benefiting Innovative Education Grants for Fremont's public school classrooms. This year's Gala will be held on Friday February 27, from 5:30 p.m.-10:00 pm, at the Fremont Marriott.

The Fremont Education Foundation's "Excellence in Education" Gala is the only fundraising event in Fremont that promotes and celebrates excellence in education at the K-12 level within our public schools. Funds raised for the Foundation's grants will allow us to continue to sponsor and expand our support of exceptional projects in our classrooms, with the intention of improving educational achievement and broadening the horizons and experiences of our students. Over the past 18 years, FEF has awarded over 160 grants to teachers, directly benefiting tens of thousands of students in our schools. Given the current budget crisis, classroom needs are greater than ever as the District ponders how to cut $25 million from its budget.

Each year, the Fremont Education Foundation chooses two honorees to celebrate - one from within the Fremont Unified School District and one from the greater community - for their outstanding contributions to education within Fremont. This year, we are proud to celebrate the contributions of Niles Rotary, as our 2009 "Excellence in Education" Community Honoree, and to honor the combined contributions of Bev Chernoff and Linda Garbarino, as our 2009 "Excellence in Education" FUSD Honorees. Chernoff and Garbarino are both long time instructional leaders within the Fremont Unified School District, serving as liaisons between FUSD and FEF since the early 1990s. As of next year, both will be retired. Niles Rotary was one of the original supporters of the Fremont Education Foundation, and the organization and its members have supported the Foundation, our schools, and other programs for children for many years, through donations, Interact Clubs (junior Rotary), and volunteerism.

In addition to being a fundraiser, our goal is always to enchant and inspire. This year, we ask you to enjoy "Surfin' Safari: A Day at the Boardwalk" as you experience the entertainment, sounds, and food of a day at the boardwalk. We will be featuring games provided by five of our district business associations, fortune tellers, a caricaturist, Tim Reilly and the Canyon Band doing their best imitation of the "Beach Boys," a silent auction and raffle, and our headliner performance of the evening - Dr. Dave Hill, hypnotist. Dave has performed over 5,000 hypnosis shows over the past 20 years at numerous casinos in Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Atlantic City as well as comedy clubs, colleges, high schools, state fairs, festivals, and theme parks, such as Great America.

We will also have one live auction item from the Ellen DeGeneres Show: an Ellen DeGeneres Basket filled with four VIP tickets to a taping of her show along with 4 Ellen shirts, 4 Ellen boxers, 4 Ellen mugs, and 4 double disc DVDs.

You can also try your luck at winning or being the highest bidder on silent auction and raffle items such as tour tickets to Hearst Castle, show tickets to Beach Blanket Babylon, or a stay in Mendocino. There is everything from bagels for a year to gift certificates for local shopping and dining to art for your home to a dinner for 8 prepared in your home. Not to mention gift baskets galore!

Tickets are $75 per person, and sponsorship opportunities are available. To register, visit or call Nina Moore at 510-409-9940. All proceeds benefit FEF's Innovative Education Grant fund.
