Lunar New Year brings Year of the Ox
Submitted By Helen Kennedy
The Year of the Ox marks the beginning of a new year for one of the most diverse communities in the Bay Area. Union City's first-ever major celebration of the Lunar New Year takes place on Sunday, February 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the city's Sports Center. As part of the city's 50th Anniversary Celebration, the event will spread the spirit of community that will bring good fortune to Union City residents.
In honor of traditions practiced by many people of Asian ancestries who live in Union City, the day will include: a New Year Parade, Lion and Dragon Dance, martial arts, music, art, food, and more!
Ben's Shaolin Kung Fu Dance Team will kick off the New Year Parade, led by Master Peter Chan. The Lion and Dragon Dance is an ancient Chinese tradition performed by Kung Fu practitioners to chase away evil spirits and bring good luck and prosperity in the New Year.
Jiayu Jeng, host of KTSF26 Television's "Talk Tonight" will be the special guest emcee for the event. The afternoon program is designed to share the best of Asian cultural traditions:
The world-famous California Youth Chinese Symphony (CYCS) Martial Arts Demonstrations by O Mei Kung Fu Academy Crystal Children's Choir A traditional Chinese instrumental performance by the faculty of CYCS Lisa Performing Arts United Youth Enrichment School (UYES) Entertainment.
Other activities throughout the day include a Chinese cooking lesson, a calligraphy class, and food from local restaurants. There will also be demonstrations of one of Asia's most popular competitive sports, ping pong. The tournament play will culminate with an exciting final match to determine the day's top player.
The public is invited to participate in the celebration and help bring good fortune for the city's next 50 years. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children age 10 and under. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.unioncity50.com or at the door on the day of the event. Additional parking with free shuttle service is available at the Holly Center and the Kaiser Permanente Union City clinic.
