Newark Police to host citizen academy
Submitted By Terri Hernandez
Beginning Wednesday, February 25, the Newark Police Department will host its tenth Citizen Police Academy (CPA) since beginning the program in 2000. During the Academy, participants will be exposed to every aspect of the Newark Police Department and will learn about laws, procedures, and policies that govern law enforcement. In turn, department members will have the opportunity to receive feedback and ideas from participants. Our hope is that the course curriculum, coupled with the experiences of the students, will lead to lively and informative discussions. The objective of the CPA is not to make the graduates police officers, but to create more informed citizens who have a greater general knowledge of the department's many functions.
The CPA consists of a series of seven classes held once per week on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A mandatory records check is required for all potential participants and enrollment for this session is limited to 20 students. There is no cost to participate in the CPA.
More information on the CPA can be found at www.newark.org or contact Terri Hernandez at (510) 578-4352.
