Tax assistance returns
Submitted By Johnny L. Yee
This year saving dollars for individuals and families are even more important as our local, state, and national economy deteriorates. In 2009, the Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) will enter its seventh year of offering free tax preparation for both Federal and State to individuals and families through their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. In 2008, FRC VITA program served more than 1,150 individuals and families resulting in over $1.2 million in Federal refunds, $145,000 in State refunds, and $550,000 of Earned Income Tax Credit.
The VITA program, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), is available for qualifying individuals and families who earned less than $43,000 annually. For this year, individuals and families may be eligible for higher standard deductions, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and other credits they did not know about. Additionally, if the individuals or families did not apply for their Economic Stimulus check last year, they may still be eligible to get their Economic Stimulus dollars this year.
This free tax preparation service is available at the Fremont Family Resource Center Monday and Wednesday from 4 - 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. starting on Monday, February 2, 2009, and ending on Monday, April 13, 2009. Taxpayers with direct deposits can get their refunds within 7 - 14 day with e-filing if there are no issues. There will be free on-site child care available as well.
The items the taxpayers will need to bring for this free income tax assistance are social security cards or letters, individual taxpayers identification number (ITIN) cards or letters, drivers license or other official picture ID and documents for 2008 such as W-2s, 1099s, 1098s,year-end interest statements, IRA contributions, property taxes paid if owned a home, child care expenses with information on child care provider(address, phone number, and their SSA or EIN),direct deposit information for refunds (void check if depositing into checking account, routing and account numbers for saving) and, if applicable, rent information (name, address, and phone number of landlord. A copy of last year's tax return is helpful. Married couples filing jointly must arrive together.
