Milpitas soccer roundup

By Idorenyin Uto-Uko

Milpitas boys and girls soccer teams' goal was to begin the 2009 year with wins in the competitive Santa Clara Valley League (SCVAL) during the week of Monday, Jan. 5, through Saturday, Jan. 10. In the boys competition, they played tough teams from Santa Clara on Wednesday, Jan. 7, and Fremont High of Sunnyvale on Friday, Jan. 9.

The Milpitas boys came into the week looking to improve its 5-5-2 (0-2-0) record. That's just what the Trojans did. Wednesday, Jan. 7, versus the Bruins of Santa Clara, the Trojans proved who was superior. They set the tone early in the first half by relying on its defense and scoring efforts of Robert Ceja. Ceja's quickness and dribbling skills put the Trojans on the scoreboard early as he had two goals in the first half.

Santa Clara eventually would net a goal. But, not before the Trojans would claim victory and win their first league contest on the road.

Friday's contest against the Firebirds of Fremont-Sunnyvale was no walk in the park for the Trojans. Fresh off Wednesday's road victory, the Trojans played on tired legs as the Firebirds burned the Trojans in the first half, trailing 1-0.

After halftime, the Trojans suddenly woke their tired legs and entered the second half refreshed and renewed. They would rally their battle cry around Robert Ceja, as he helped his team with two goals in the second half securing the Trojan victory, 2-1, for two victories in the week.

The Milpitas girls team had a different outcome versus Santa Clara. They came into the contest seeking to get back on the winning track after a 1-7-2 start. They played the Bruins tough in the first half. At first it didn't look as if either team would score in the match, but the Bruins grabbed the first goal of the game midway through the first half.

The Lady Trojans stifled the Bruins the rest of the way, not allowing another score. Unfortunately, the Trojans would not score either. The Trojans ended the game with a 1-0 loss.

This week, the boys will play on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Palo Alto before hosting Monte Vista on Friday, Jan. 16. The girls will host Saratoga on Friday, Jan. 16, before they visit Wilcox on Monday, Jan. 19.
