Lady Gladiators even record with upset of top ranked CCSF

By Biff Jones

Chabot College women's basketball opened its Coast Conference North Division (CCND) 2009 season last week with a disappointing loss to San Mateo, and a riveting upset of then-number-one ranked City College of San Francisco.

Chabot's week began on Wednesday, Jan. 7, with a 73-71 home loss to the College of San Mateo. Leading scorer for Head Coach Don Queyrel's Lady Gladiators was sophomore guard, Rose Thompson, with 25 points; freshman guard Dezzirae Cafferata had 16 points and seven assists; and sophomore forward Sequoyah Reed contributed 11 points while pulling down 11 rebounds.

On Friday, Jan. 9, Chabot traveled to NorCal number-one ranked (number two in the state) City College of San Francisco Rams, for its second CCND game of the season. In early December, the Gladiators played a nonconference game against the Rams on a neutral court, and fell, 80-60.

The New Year would be a different story as the Chabot women upset CCSF, 97-81. With the victory, the Gladiators evened its conference record to 1-1, and improved their overall record to 9-10. Leading the way for Chabot was Thompson with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists; Cafferata added 28 points and five assists; and Reed dropped 17 points and grabbed 10 boards. Freshman guard Monica Garcia also helped, contributing 11 points and six rebounds in the win.

Other teams in CCND are Foothill of Los Altos Hills, Los Positas of Livermore and Skyline of San Bruno. Next up for the Lady Gladiators is an away game against sister college, Los Positas, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 5:30 p.m. They return home on Friday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. against Foothill.
