Submitted By Timothy S. Hess

Newark Memorial Lady Cougar wrestling opened the new year on a positive note, with a tournament championship at the Queen of the Mat Invitational held at Pittsburg High on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Schools from North, Central and Southern California, as well as Nevada, competed in the 24-team tournament.

The Cougars, who finished in second place behind Jesse Bethel High last week, came back and defeated the Jaguars at the Queen of the Mat. Host school Pittsburgh finished in third place.

At 154 lbs, Alyssa Hess earned her fourth tournament title this season with two pins and a major decision victory. Thuy Tran (114) cruised into the finals with three straight pins, but fell to Alice Hoover of Bethel in the finals, 1-7. Katie Burdick (165) bounced back after a first-round loss and finished in third place. Senior Justine Sanchez (145) placed third; freshman Lisa Tran (98) finished fifth; and sophomore Kasha Flojo (126) finished sixth and scored valuable place points for the Cougars in their victory.

Next up for the Lady Cougars is the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Northern California Regional Tournament at Inderkum High in Sacramento on Friday, Jan. 16, and Satuday, Jan. 17.
