Gladiator women have a rough holiday season

By Tony Cogley

The Chabot women's basketball team entered tournament play in the Lady Jag Invitational at San Jose City College on Saturday, Dec. 27, with an overall record of 7-6, and a tournament play record of 4-2 for the season. Both stat columns would not remain intact by week's end.

Chabot's opening game was against the 13-2 Pasadena City College Lancers, and suffered a lopsided defeat, 84-66. Guards Dezzirae Cafferata, Rose Thompson and forward Sequoyah Reed, who all played together at Westmoor High in Daly City, were in double figures in points: Thompson, with 20, Cafferata, with 15, and Reed, with 10.

Next up were the Santa Rosa City College Bear Cubs, who also were able to put up big points against the Gladiator defense, winning 86-65, and eliminating Chabot from the tourney.

Chabot then returned home and started the New Year off with a decisive win over visiting Feather River Golden Eagles, 71-49, on Friday, Jan. 2, and got back to .500 overall. Dezzirae Cafferata was at it again, scoring a team-high 21 points, with five 3-pointers; and Rose Thompson's 14 points and 11 boards were good for a double-double.

The stage was set for a Bay Area Junior College showdown when the visiting Ohlone Renegades traveled to Hayward with their 5-6 overall record. At the half, with the score 38-35 in Chabot's favor, it was apparent the game would be won by whichever team was willing to grind it out to the very end.

The Gladiators had four different players in double digits, including Thompson's 26, but were unable to fend off the Renegades attack and lost a close one, 75-71. The ladies will next hit the road against San Francisco City College on Friday, Jan. 9, and now have an overall record of 8-9.
