Concert Accentuates the Season

By Melody Yee

The Stars Youth Orchestra (SYO), led by Mr. Lei Zhang, celebrated the holiday season with a December 14 concert. Raffle prizes donated by enthusiastic parents added to a festive atmosphere. The concert opened with the Christmas Carol, "Angels we have Heard on High," performed by the SYO First Violin Ensemble. Spring Dance, soloist Sharon Zhen, artfully reminded the audience of the bygone season of spring.

SYO String Quartet did its best to ingenuously entwine disparate musical styles by first presenting Beethoven and, with the flick of the wrist, performing the considerably freer, more modern swing of Gershwin's "Sweet and Low Down." Ms. Alice Wang and Mr. Lei Zhang together revealed the beauty of Mozart amid punctuations of applause.

The orchestra enthusiastically marched through "Fuga for Strings," filling the room with its quick cadence. Vivaldi's. "Winter" with violin soloist Sean Ang shivered into the program with arpeggios mimicking the dancing decent of snowflakes. The concert then mellowed into the familiar tune "Greensleeves" with harp soloist Lucy Liu, flute soloist Ray Wu, and violin soloist Vanessa Li. At last the orchestra performed the sweet, sentimental "Summer Getaway", by Phil Young, the Bay Area renowned composer, who was in the audience for the world premier of his very own piece, written exclusively for the Stars Youth Orchestra.
