The FC Eagles (D3 U-11 girls soccer team) finished second in the 2008 CYSA District III Cup at the Fremont Central Park Soccer Fields earlier this month.

A little over a year ago, the Eagles won both Fremont's U-10 Girls Director's Cup and District III's Crossroads Tournament as a house team. This year, the team moved up to represent FC Fremont in the Al Caffodio High Comp Division III League. The FC Eagles finish tied for third in the 11-team league with a 6-2-2 record.

Determined to improve their standing in the District Cup Tournament, the Eagles played in the Gold Flight against the Newark Crushers, San Ramon Spirit and top-seeded Mustang Extreme, who went undefeated during league play.

The Eagles first game was against the Extreme, to whom the Eagles lost 3-1 during the regular season. The Eagles played a strong defensive game with team goalie, Emily Banks, resulting in a tie, 0-0.

Later in the afternoon, the Eagles faced the tough San Ramon Spirit (5-4-1). During the regular season, the Eagles played the Spirit to a 1-1 draw. This time, the Eagles prevailed with scores from Aashna Pandya and Emily Banks, winning 2-0.

In the final game of the Gold Flight, the Eagles defeated the neighboring Newark Crushers (2-7-1) 3-0, with goals from Haley Yuen and Kirsten Wong.

By the end of round robin play, the Eagles and the Mustang Extreme were tied, and needed to determine which team would play the second-seeded Mustang Stampede in the championship by having a penalty-kick shootout.

Eagles' keeper, Emily Banks, who was outstanding throughout the tournament, blocked the first shot. Eagles forward Kirsten Wong took the teams first shot, and scored. The Extreme followed with a goal, but missed on their third shot. Eagles fullback Evalina Chinn narrowly missed, hitting the crossbar; center fullback Esmeralda Rojas drilled the Eagles third shot over the goalie's head for a goal.

The Extreme made their last two shots. Eagles' center forward, Haley Yuen, scored on a shot high in the right corner of the goal. At 3-3, with a spot in the District Cup Championship game at stake, the Eagles' defending midfielder Shelby Norris shot to the low right corner of the goal, and scored.

The Eagles, who lost to the Mustang Stampede during the regular season, were unable to finish the season with another championship, coming up short 3-0. Despite losing in the championship game, the Eagles showed every team in the Al Caffodio League that they will continue to be a team to be reckoned with in years to come.
