Anniversary group produces 2009 calendar
Submitted By Rhonda Rigenhagen
Union City has scheduled more than two dozen events throughout 2009 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. To make sure residents don't miss out on a single one, the 50th Anniversary Committee has published a 2009 wall calendar that conveniently marks each date an activity is planned.
Each month features a photograph of unsung community heroes, beginning with the James Logan High School Band and Color Guard performing at the 2008 Olympics and including business leaders, inspirational teachers, civil servants and other community volunteers.
Cost is $12 each. Buy four and get one free! Businesses interested in giving them to employees or customers - or community groups interested in a fundraiser - can buy bulk quantities at a discount.
A great, last-minute gift for the holidays, the calendars are on sale now at http://www.UnionCity50.com, and will be available on Monday December 22 at Paddy's Coffee House, 3900 Smith Street. A reception for the honorees will take place there on Saturday, January 3, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The following people were nominated for the honor of being included in the 50th Anniversary Calendar because of the work they have done to create a true "community" in Union City:
January: The James Logan High School Band and Color Guard
February: Jaime Jaramillo (Centro de Servicios)
March: Business leaders Gloria Watson (Corinthian Realty), Makhan Bains (Raja Sweets and Teriyaki Experience), and Julie Zhu (Fremont Bank)
April: Women behind the scenes (Cleo Powell, Mattie Rousseau, Judy Preciado, Heidi Kitayama, Luisa Orozco, Alvesa Orozco, Gloria Pacheco and Marcella Roderigues.)
May: Marcia Badella (Ohlone Humane Society)
June: Inspirational teachers Linda Chew (Eastin Elementary School), Tommie Lindsey (Logan High School), Patsy Lockhart (Cesar Chavez Middle School) and Kim Pratt (Alvarado Elementary School)
July: Jess Martinez (Our Lady of the Rosary Church)
August: The Union City Youth Commission
September: Ann Riojas (Girl Scouts) and Bill Fournell (Boy Scouts)
October: Cathi Sweeney (Planning Commission, CERT), Al Rose (retired Alvarado District Volunteer Fire Chief) and Steve Rogge (firefighter, CERT)
November: Dr. Joseph Phaneuf, Kaiser Permanente
December: Ethel Alt
The calendar was conceived and developed by a team of volunteer members of the UC50 Marketing Committee. Most of the remarkable photos were taken by Union City resident Don Feria, who is a professional photographer working as a volunteer. Tim Swenson and Megan Boyer provided additional photos. Graphic design was done by Rick LaForce and content by Rhonda Rigenhagen.
