Book Review: The Zerkian Chronicles: Prince Zeethar's Defection

By Giovanni Albanese Jr.

The Zerkian Chronicles: Prince Zeethar's Defection by Miguel Aviles.
Xlibris Corporation, 2008; 168 pages; Paperback, $19.99

Hayward native Miguel Aviles had a lot to get off his chest. His former fiancˇ would have verbal battles from time to time until she blurted out the words, "why don't you just write a book about it!" What spawned from those words was Aviles' debut novel, The Zerkian Chronicles: Prince Zeethar's Defection.

Prince Zeethar's Defection is the first book in a nine-book series, according to Aviles. The story takes the reader on the journey of Zerkian war-prince Kiplan Zeethar (modeled after Aviles) in a first-person narrative.

Beginning on Earth in his Zerkian form (which is essentially an oversized blue cat), Prince Zeethar morphs into his human form, and comes to the realization that he must defend Earth (the planet to which he was exiled) against his own people, the Zerkians.

Subsequent chapters bring you from present day, where Zeethar is battling the Zerkians in defense of Earth and all the humans; then to the past, when the prince was in school, learning the craft of self defense and battle.

Transitions from past to present, and vice-versa, are shaky, at best, leaving slight confusion. Consequently, the flow of the story slows a bit, even with the writing aimed at a fourth-grade audience.

Adding to some of the confusion that the novel presents is the seemingly continuous introduction to a new element - whether a character, a method of self defense, an item or storyline. But, perhaps as the nine-book series develops, there will be less description of new elements and more focus on the "Chronicles."

There are stretches in the book with action scenes that take you away from the patchiness and into a smooth, fast read. However, the distribution of action throughout the novel is lacking.

Ambush on Pluto is the title of the second book in the series of the Zerkian Chronicles. It is planned to be released in 2009. At the conclusion of Prince Zeethar's Defection, an excerpt from Ambush on Pluto is available to give you a glimpse of what is to come in Prince Zeethar's future.

Zerkian Chronicles: Prince Zeethar's Defection may be a bit confusing and patchy, but it grows on you. When you finish, you'll want to know what happens next.
