Mt. Eden's struggles continue
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Mt. Eden boys continue to play inconsistent soccer. After a week where the boys went one up, two down and one stalemate, they resulted in two losses and a tie last week.
It began on Tuesday, Dec. 9, when they went up against fellow Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) foe, Tennyson. The Monarchs jumped in front when Jose Loya assisted on a Javier Martin goal. Mt. Eden took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Tennyson evened the match in the second half and despite 16 shots at goal, the Monarchs of Mt. Eden couldn't put another one by the Tennyson keeper. The game ended in a draw, 1-1.
On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Monarchs took on another HAAL opponent, San Lorenzo. Three first-half goals shot the hopes of Mt. Eden. They were unable to put any of their six shots in the net; San Lorenzo tallied one second-half goal, going on to win, 4-0.
To round out the week, Mt. Eden went out of league play to face Clayton Valley on Saturday, Dec. 13. The Monarchs were able to knock one into the net this game. However, their struggles on defense continued. Clayton Valley scored three of their own, and prevailed, 3-0.
Now holding a record of 1-5-2 on the year, 0-1-1 in the HAAL, Mt. Eden will next take the field against HAAL frontrunner, undefeated Bishop O'Dowd, on Friday, Dec. 19.
