Information workshop to empower community members against domestic violence
Submitted By Gwen Mitchell
The Domestic Violence Information and Resources Workshop connects individuals and families affected by domestic violence with nearly 40 agencies, services and resources throughout Santa Clara County. The Domestic Violence Information and Resource Collaborative (DVIR) is partnering with the India Community Center and seeks to encourage participation of Milpitas residents, particularly community members from the Indian and Southeast Asian Communities.
Everyone is welcome to attend and learn about domestic violence, how to report it, and where to find confidential help for relatives, friends, co-workers or acquaintances experiencing or perpetrating any type of domestic abuse.
Participating agencies include Superior Court judges, County of Santa Clara Office of Women's Policy, Social Services Agency, District Attorney, Public Defender, Probation, and nearly 40 service providers who can offer support, substance abuse counseling, legal services, shelter, and emergency services. Court and law enforcement representatives will share resources and answer questions about navigating the court system.
Santa Clara County had four domestic violence-related deaths in 2007. In general, domestic violence victims are safer if they report incidents to authorities or reach out to social services for help. Last year, the Santa Clara County District Attorney brought charges on 3,162 cases; this equates to 60 brand new cases of domestic violence each week in Santa Clara County. In 827 cases children were present, 88 of the victims were pregnant and 66 victims were teens.
Free transportation, parking, child supervision, dinner, interpreters in Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean and other languages will be provided at no cost to participants. To schedule a ride, or for more information call (408) 299-5135 or email email@example.com.
To protect the confidentiality and safety of victims, still or video cameras will NOT be allowed at the workshop.
