Chabot women fall short at Comet Classic
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Chabot College women's basketball was one of eight teams that made its way to Contra Costa for the 15th Annual Comet Classic tournament from Thursday, Dec. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 6. Only one team out-dueled the Lady Gladiators, as they finished runner up, to San Francisco.
On Thursday, Dec. 4, Chabot took on the host college, Contra Costa, in the main event of the day. The Lady Gladiators sent the fans home disappointed, running away and hiding from Contra Costa, 68-52.
Again playing in the late game on Friday, Dec. 5, Chabot was matched up against Yuba in the semifinals. The Gladiators, playing in their home whites, coasted to another double-digit victory, 80-69.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, Chabot and San Francisco were center-stage for the right to be champion of the 15th Annual Comet Classic. While Chabot had come into the game with two convincing double-digit wins - one by 16; the other by 11 - San Francisco had entered the finals by downright pummeling its opponents - 83-46 over Los Medanos in game one; 69-44 over Siskiyous in the semifinals.
It wasn't much different for San Francisco in the finals. While they had margins of 27 and 25 in victory to advance to the championship against Chabot, they only managed a 20-point margin to win the title, 80-60.
Chabot looks to bounce back this weekend - Friday, Dec. 12, through Sunday, Dec. 14 - at the Solano College Tournament, with an opening-round game against Diablo Valley, December 12 at 6 p.m. The tournament will not feature San Francisco.
