Ballet Folklorico Milpitas Winter Recital

Submitted By Maria Nguyen

The Ballet Folklorico Milpitas will present traditional Mexican folk dances, especially those performed in the winter according to each region or state of Mexico. The recital will take place at the Center for Employment Training (CET).
Three special guests will perform: Manuel Romero, Mariachi Tequila, and "El Mosquito," a group of Jarocho Musicians.

There will also be games and food. We will have a Mexican Popular bingo game "Loteria", "Ponle la cola al Burro," etc. There will be tamales, chocolate, pan dulce, ponche, and more.

Ballet Folklorico Milpitas is an educational program that promotes the performing arts, engaging individuals to experience the indigenous and folkloric dances of Mexico. Ballet Folklorico Milpitas gives their students the opportunity to learn about the costumes, music, dance choreographies and traditions of each particular dance from a state or region of Mexico. Our goal is to preserve the pre-Hispanic, mestizas, and contemporary dances of Mexico.

Ballet Folklorico Milpitas collaborates with the Santa Clara County Libraries in offering several performances throughout the year, and other community groups such as churches, schools, as well as Mariachi Bands and local singers including Manuel Romero.

Since 2001 we had our First Annual Recital at The Milpitas Community Center. We honor the word "Milpitas" because it means little corn plants, as you know the corn is the most important food in the Mexican diet.

"Milpitas" also stands for each of the young member of this group. We need to water and take care of them so they can grow and produce the new seeds, so our traditions can pass on from one generation to the next generation.

Ballet Folklorico Milpitas provides a year round program, with weekly folklorico dance classes offered to children of different ethnic backgrounds, ages four years old and up to participate in the performing arts.

Ballet Folklorico Milpitas also presents to Santa Clara County residents the annual Winter Recital where families can appreciate and value the Mexican Culture and also share the traditions to other ethnic communities. We have a Winter Recital in December and an Annual Recital in June.

Ballet Folklorico Milpitas embraces input and assistance from the performers of different ethnic groups (such as Hispanic, Filipino, Korean and Vietnamese) and their families so we can span all cultures and languages to help every child and family. Space is very limited. Contact Ofelia Gomez at (408) 272-4940 for more information.
