Moreau Catholic two-sport star signs with Cal Poly SLO
By Biff Jones
Kayla Griffin, a senior at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, has achieved many accolades as an athlete in both basketball and softball. Now, all her hard work and determination has paid off with the acceptance into a Division I sports program.
Griffin considered several colleges and universities before deciding to accept a basketball scholarship to Division I, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), and has signed a letter of intent to matriculate there next fall.
During her tenure at Moreau Catholic thus far, she has been chosen to the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) First Team in basketball and softball. In addition, she was one of seven finalists for girls state Junior Athlete of the Year in 2007-08, and was chosen to the All-State softball team in 2008 for Division III, or medium-sized schools, determined by enrollment. Both awards were by CalHiSports.
This past June, Griffin started her summer off by tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her knee while playing for her club basketball team, East Bay Xplosion. After undergoing arthroscopic surgery, the 5-foot-11 Fremont resident is back playing basketball for Moreau Catholic and intends to play softball in the spring.
Besides the scholarship, another reason for Griffin's choice is that SLO is only a three and a half hour drive from the Bay Area; her parents, Stephanie and John, can continue to follow her athletic career while she pursues a degree in Kinesiology.
