New Years tickets hot in Union City

By Simon Wong

Union City's 50th Anniversary Celebrations (UC50) will begin in style on December 31, 2008. Two gala events have been planned. The Black & White Ball will be a glamorous and sumptuous formal event, the first of its kind in the City's history. Professional party planner, Splurge Catering & Special Events, will transform the Union City Sports Center into a fitting venue for the occasion, fully hosted with an open bar. Attendees can expect to be entertained graciously. A black-and-white theme will be carried over into the decor and table settings with a dash of gold. A Master of Ceremonies will oversee the proceedings.

The event will begin with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres served in the foyer and a silent auction. Details of the silent auction remain a closely-guarded secret. Fifty tables will be named after Union City landmarks. "Dinner will consist of a wonderful entree, New York steak with garlic-infused potatoes and a special, commemorative dessert," said Ric Serianni, Splurge Catering & Special Events. Table wine will be provided. The meal will be accompanied by background music and an audio-visual display celebrating the City's rich heritage. After dinner, The Groove Doctors will perform live. Following the countdown to the start of 2009, dancing will continue until 1 a.m.

That same evening, on the other side of town, an informal, nightclub-style Masquerade Party will be in full swing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Doors open at 6 p.m. for this event modelled on the fancy dress balls of the Carnivals in Rio and Venice. Revellers will be able to take to the dance floor immediately. Dance band Savoir Faire will take over from the house DJ at 8.30 p.m. and play live until 1.00 a.m. Guests will be able to help themselves to hors d'oeuvres from food stations. Drinks will be available from two cash bars.

Official photographers will be present at both events. Charles Foster White Photography will donate a percentage of his sale proceeds to UC50.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel has reduced its tariff from $149 per room to $99 per room for anyone attending either The Masquerade Party or the Black & White Ball and wishing to stay overnight.

"Celebration of the City's 50th Anniversary is not restricted to Union City residents. We want Fremont, Newark and Hayward to join us. The events are for all communities in the Tri-City area and further afield," said New Year's Eve Galas Committee Chair Helen Cabiles. "We want everyone in the Tri-City family and our neighbours to participate."

Entrance to both gala functions is by advance ticket sales only.
