North Coast Section football pairings set

On Sunday, Nov. 16, the North Coast Section held its annual post-season meetings to determine the seeds of its football tournament.

Division III will have 15 participants in its tournament. Encinal earned the no. 1 seed for the tournament, and the only first round bye. This weekend's first-round matchups will see the no. 2 seed Miramonte playing host to no. 15 Del Norte; no. 3 Novato will host no. 14 Drake; no. 4 Bishop O'Dowd hosts no. 13 Tomalpais; no. 5 Marin Catholic hosts no. 12 Analy; no. 6 Piedmont goes up against no. 11 Fortuna; no. 7 Healdsburg hosts no. 10 McKinleyville; and no. 8 El Cerrito takes on no. 9 John F. Kennedy High.

In Division II, 12 teams will take to the field, with the top four seeds - Cardinal Newman, Clayton Valley, Rancho Cotate and Campolindo respectively - earning a first-round bye. The remaining eight teams will battle each other for the right to take on the aforementioned teams. The victor of no. 5 Ukiah vs. no. 12 Ygnacio Valley will play at Campolindo in round two; Rancho Cotate will host the winner of no. 6 Las Lomas vs. no. 11 Eureka; no. 7 Casa Grande and no. 10 Concord will duel for the right to go to Clayton Valley in the second round; and the winner of no. 8 Heritage and no. 9 Redwood will get the top-seeded Cardinal Newman.

Division I also has 12 seeds in its tournament. The top four seeds - De La Salle, Monte Vista, Pittsburg and Foothill respectively - will have the first round off. No. 5 Freedom and no. 12 James Logan High will take to the field for the right to play at Foothill in the second round; meanwhile, no. 6 Cal will go to no. 11 Washington to get a second round date with Pittsburg; Monte Vista will take on the winner of no. 7 SRV vs. no. 10 San Leandro; and De La Salle waits for the winner between no. 8 Berkeley and no. 9 Deer Valley.

Central Coast Section, too

Meanwhile, in the Central Coast Section (CCS) open division, Milpitas earned themselves one of the eight positions in the tournament. They will take the field against Bellermine Prep at San Jose City College on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.

Palma vs. Oak Grove; North Salinas vs. Valley Christian; and Serra vs. Gilroy round out the other three first-round games.

Action for both the NCS and CCS tournaments will begin Friday night, Nov. 21.
