Gomes wins Happy Fish Run challenge

Submitted By Nirupama Vaidyanathan

Gomes Elementary School was the winner in the Elementary School Challenge at the 2008 Happy Fish Run for Education held on October 12 at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont. The school won $1,000 in gift certificates for new sports equipment to be purchased at Sports Basement stores locally.

Liz Elliott of Happy Fish says, "We had at least one participant from each of the 28 elementary schools in Fremont which was great, but Gomes had the most number of participants. The event raised over $25,000 for the Fremont Education Guy Emanuele Sports Fund. This fund provides scholarships to high school students in the Fremont Unified School District that wish to participate in after school sport or cheerleading, but do not have the means to cover equipment cost and other expenses related to their sport. Proceeds from the run also helps fund the after-school basketball leagues for both boys and girls at Fremont elementary schools."

Carol Aizawa and Jill Hiroto, co-presidents of the Gomes PTA are thrilled that their dedicated push towards getting more students to be active with their families paid off with a large number of students turning up for the Run, helping win an award for the school.
