Ohlone Renegades basketball tip off the season
By Idorenyin Uto-Uko
The weather is cold outside, but the women of Ohlone College look to heat the gym with their basketball prowess this season. Ohlone College is one of the most successful women's college basketball teams in the Bay Area.
The team has won over 20 games or more each of the past five seasons. In 2007 the team won the Coast Conference Championship and reached the state playoffs. This year's talented team has eight fabulous freshmen whose skills have the potential to skyrocket out of the gym.
"We have a very athletic team this year," said head coach Elizabeth Stanley. "I feel we will be competitive and our women expect success due to their diligence."
Even though the team is young they are lead by the veteran leadership of highly recruited sophomore sensation Geneya Rodgers and her standout Milpitas High School teammate Louise Valdez. Coach Stanley has high hopes for Valdez, Rodgers and the rest of her team.
"We are ahead of the game," said Stanley. "Our main challenge is keeping our athletes healthy and injury free." Rodgers, a recruit of Division 1 college UCLA, and some of the Renegades other top performers are hurt; Coach Stanley remains optimistic.
The Renegades participated in an all-day scrimmage event in San Mateo on November 1 to warm up for the season. They will next travel to Utah to play in the Salt Lake City College Tournament from Thursday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 15.
"The tournament will be a good opportunity for us to see how we play against regional and national competition," said Stanley, who hopes to gain unity with her team of talented youth and well-honored veterans during this tournament and throughout the season. "We would like to develop a sense of synergy; if we do that we will be very successful this year."
