On Thursday Irvington's OTC came up against the tough Newark Hot Shots. The Hot Shots had strong, fast forwards and it took strong defense particularly by Tiffany Sarchet and Christina Kim to contain them in the early going. OTC still managed several chances on goal until finally Erica Ohye robbed a Hot Shots defender of the ball on the edge of the goal area and slammed the ball over the keeper into the roof of the net unassisted. Minutes later Ohye had a chance to double the lead from a similar position, but her shot hit the crossbar and bounced safely away from the goal. Just before halftime, the Hot Shots center forward received the ball at the half way line and used her speed to break through OTC's defense and then make a well placed shot past the diving OTC goalkeeper, Sara Talooi, to make it 1-1 at the half.
In the second half, OTC started strongly and soon scored again when Megan Dunn fed the ball to Stephanie Schembri who beat the Hot Shots goalie with a strong first time shot. With 20 minutes left, Selina Mahesri scored OTC's third when Ohye passed to her on the right side of the goal and she calmly shot the ball into the corner of the goal. The celebrations were short lived as minutes later a rare mix up in the OTC defense let the Hot Shots left winger tap the ball into the corner of the net from close range, even though Talooi dived desperately to stop it. With the score now 3-2, the Hot Shots piled on the pressure to get an equalizer in the final minutes, but good defending by the entire OTC team ensured that they maintained their one goal advantage until the final whistle.
Next up for the OTC girls is the Newark Orange and Black Soccer Tournament. The entire OTC team sends their thanks to Irvington's Mountain Mike's Pizza for sponsoring them in the upcoming tournament.
