FUN for moms and kids
By Meenu Gupta
Elizabeth was having a hard time battling with a complicated delivery, a painful postpartum phase, and loneliness till she discovered the FUN (Fremont, Newark, Union City) Mothers' Club. Soon she found friends for herself and her son. The club's secure and personal chat group of experienced moms answered her questions, besides giving her information about local events for toddlers. "It truly has changed my family's life and my only regret is that we didn't find it sooner," said Elizabeth Crandall-Whittom, now the playgroups' coordinator.
Jamie Heston, now the club's co-director, agrees with Elizabeth. Sharing her five year experience with the club she said, "As a member, and as a board member, I want all moms to experience what I did - information, friendship and support, through playgroups, mom's nights out, parties, socials, play dates, our famous May pampering meeting, end of year dinner and more."
An all volunteer run, non-profit organization of over 320 members, the club provides support, shared knowledge and a sense of community. Parents and their families who are either expecting or have children age 5 and younger in the Fremont, Union City and Newark areas are welcome to join. Parents not living in these areas may also join, but the club's events take place in these cities mostly.
The club is run by a volunteer Board of Directors that changes each year. "Volunteering allowed me to be in closer, more frequent contact with the moms on the board and to foster closer relationships with them, since we all need to rely on each other and run the club," said Heston.
"Members of the club look forward to the Halloween Monster Bash at Sulpher Creek, mom's night out, pumpkin farm visit, Fall Story time and the new member social. "My daughter enjoys her playgroup friends. She loves petting animals and feeding them, during the club's farm visits," said Monica Dani, Club Outreach Coordinator 2008, F.U.N. Mothers Club.
The club also organizes rummage sale once a year and a maternity closet and other items exchange. The club is a team of compassionate mothers who go out of their way, volunteering to help other moms in need. "This is what our In a Pinch meal delivery is all about. Helping a new mom, taking time out of one's busy day to feed another family in need is a special calling in our club," said Dani. So, if you are a new mom wanting to shed the extra calories, the club can be your workout pal. If you have been postponing the candle light dinner with your hubby for too long and don't remember when was the last time you went out with friends, chatted over a cup of coffee, the club has ways to set you free. "For all the 'me times,' we attend coffee socials, mother's night out, play Bunco, get pampered at our grandmother's day event and celebrate and have fun at our October end of year annual appreciation dinner party." said Dani.
