Happy fish run for sports
For the past three years, "happy fish" have appeared near the waters of Lake Elizabeth to walk and run at Fremont's Central Park. The fourth annual Happy Fish Run 4 Education set for Sunday, October 12, will attract participants of all ages to circle the lake in support of school-sponsored sports activities. This event is attended by two-legged "fish" of all ages interested in having fun while promoting fitness and the Fremont Education Foundation (FEF) Guy Emanuele Sports Fund.
Happy Fish Swim School created this event with FEF to support school-sponsored sports programs, providing scholarships to help offset costs of equipment, sportswear, transportation costs, fees, shoes, sports bags, tournament fees, and other related items required for participation. This active day of fun encourages participation by all offering a 5k walk/run (one time around the lake), 10k run or a 1/4 and 1/2 mile fun for ages 4-10.
The Glenmoor Advanced Band, elementary school students from six different Fremont schools, will play the 5k and 10k finishers across the finish line and Bay Aerials Gymnastics will perform. Learning Bee Learning Center Singers will also entertain everyone before and after the run. In addition, a Family Fitness Expo, free to participants, will provide family activities and refreshments.
This year, the Start/Finish Line and Family Fitness Expo will be in the large grass near Area B, off Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont near two children's play areas and parking.
Although many have pre-registered for this event, it's not too late to join the fun; even race day registration is available. Register online at www.happyfishrun4education.com or in person at Happy Fish Swim School through Saturday, October 11. Race day registration begins at Central Park at 7:30 a.m.
Adults are welcome to run and/or bring the kids to enjoy the Kids Corral. Prizes and medals are awarded for top finishing participants, but the greatest winners are the athletic programs at Fremont schools. Sponsors have already raised $22,000 in cash and over $16,000 of in-kind donations to support to this effort.
The Run 4 Education, FEF is currently able to award up to $200 per scholarship recipient, and was able to help fund after school basketball leagues for both and girls at 27 Fremont elementary schools last school year. Find out more at www.fremont-education.org
