It promises to be a hard and heavy Saturday in Hayward as a celebration of all styles and subgenres of metal make their appearance. This festival shines the spotlight on a vibrant metal scene in our midst.
Pete Schaaphok of Mystic Rage was inspired to start Bands4bands after experiencing the competitive, cutthroat world of the band scene. This loose organization of bands from various music genres provides a nurturing, supporting environment for both established and emerging bands trying to get some exposure.
Every year, Bands4bands, based in Oakland, puts on a live show in Hayward. The event, called "Metal Fest," features a host of metal bands including God's Outlaw, Age of Aggression and Kaos.
Metal Fest, held at Memorial Park Amphitheater, is supported by Hayward's Recreational Services. The huge stage will permit two simultaneous set-ups so fans can enjoy non-stop music. Metal Fest proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army. Though this is a free event, visitors can bring a can of food to show their support.
Competition for two opening slots was held and these bands will vie for sponsorship in the next 'Battle of the Bands.' "This year the public gets a chance to vote in the winning band. You get one vote for every can donation to the event so bring a case of food for the food drive and stuff the ballot box, so to speak," encourages Schaaphok.
Lots of "metal heads" are invited to cheer for their favorite band. Bands4bands brings all the participants together for a meeting prior to the show and emphasizes the need for decorum. Lyrics are expected to be clean and no liquor is served on the premises.
Metal Fest's goal is to provide exposure for little known bands and swell the ranks of metal fans. If you enjoy heavy metal, show up for an afternoon of free music featuring bands: Age of Aggression, Thread, Kaos, In the Absense, Mudsoc, God's Outlaw, VX36, Mother Climax, Hemorhage and MCP.
