Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Tournament
By Mona Shah
Niles residents, known for their creativity, will once again host the Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament. This madcap event allows the whole family to putt their way through hilariously themed golf holes located throughout this historic Fremont community.
Each hole supplies putters; however, golfers are free to bring an old favorite, if it can take some abuse. In previous years, at the Port Hole, a pirate exhorted players to "putt the plank." After the ball dropped off the plank, players had to putt their golf balls into port, past water hazards, sharks and sand.
One year featured The Rabbit Hole; Alice and the Mad Hatter hosting a larger-than-life tea party while players putted a four-foot round "golf" ball from a teacup onto the green. It may re-appear this year.
Every year different families and businesses in the Niles district volunteer to design and host nine holes of the miniature golf game. This year Color Me Quilts and Niles Depot will create a golf hole behind their businesses to showcase their creativity!
"I think the Niles district still holds the creative spirit of yesteryear," said Nancy Haylock, one of the event organizers for the Niles Main Street Association. "Please come and join us for an afternoon of pee wee golfing fun that promises to be as wacky and tacky as ever."
Combine getting a hole in one with the excitement of a circus, and you capture the spirit of the Tournament. Proceeds benefit the Niles Main Street Association.
The event is $10 adults and $5 kids/seniors. Tickets are available the day of the event at The Nile Cafe, 121 "I" Street. For more information call Julianne (510) 794-9452 or Nancy at (510) 795-8670.
