Newark Knockouts, a U-13 Division 3 girls soccer team, lost in the championship match to Livermore Elite Arsenal '94, 7-0, in the girls Under-14 finals at the Newark Referee Classic held at Sportsfield Park in Newark on Sunday, Aug. 17.
The Knockouts posted wins over Rincon Valley Revolution of Santa Rosa, 2-1, and Central Marin Dragons of San Rafael, 3-1, in the preliminary matches on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Midfielder, Merissa Stein, shot in the Knockouts' first goal in their opening match with Rincon Valley, while forward, Alicia Gonzales, netted the game winner assisted by fellow forward, Daisy Ortega.
Gonzales continued her onslaught in game two, scoring three first-half goals in their match with Central Marin. It was the Newark defense led by Ayushi Hamdard, Nicole Eggerling and goalkeeper, Amanda Lopez, which eventually held off the Dragons' second-half charge, limiting them to one goal.
Knockouts' third match of the preliminary round was against Livermore on Sunday morning. The Elite Arsenal was able to contain Gonzales and won the match, 4-0. But the Knockouts had already accumulated enough points in their round robin flight to earn their berth in the championship game, which they eventually lost.
Other outstanding players for Newark were defenders April Ramos and Sabena Mangat, and midfielders Niny Marquez, Rachel Schultz and Karina Moreno Gil. The Knockouts had previously taken fourth place at the Claire Ann O'Neil/ Mission Bell Classic Tournament in San Rafael the previous weekend. Knockouts coaching staff is comprised of head coach Roddy Lopez and assistant coaches, Carlos Moreno Gil and Juan Marquez, with help from trainers Robert and Alyssia Sierras.
