TOPS take second place
Submitted By Nanette Cook
FC Fremont TOPS, a girl's Under-12, Division One soccer team, took second place in the Soccer by the Bay Tournament held on Saturday and Sunday, August 16-17 in San Mateo. The TOPS team played very well winning their first three games to advance to the championship game vs. the Mustang Extreme from Danville. That final championship match proved to be a very exciting game for TOPS. With only five minutes left in the game, the Fremont TOPS team was down, 2-1, as they mounted an offensive attack and stunned the Extreme by scoring two quick goals to take the lead. As the clock wound down with just thirty seconds left in the game, the Extreme snuck one into the TOPS' goal to even up the score at 3-3 and send the game into overtime. At the end of the overtime period with the score still tied, the teams moved on to penalty kicks to determine the winner. After the penalty kicks the Mustang Extreme was the victor taking first place, with the Fremont TOPS taking second. TOPS coaches and parents were very proud of the team's outstanding efforts and pleased with their second place finish. TOPS players participating in the Soccer by the Bay Tournament were: Carly Turner, Dakota Sierras, Dinaz Bamji, Jarna Patel, Jessica Hernandez, Juliana McCuaig, Megan Coffey, Melody Song, Peyton Cook, Rhianna Soares, Tylore Bell, Vienna Curtis and Yvette Cuellar, with an injured Sharan Singh on hand to lend support. The team is led by Coach Rob Hernandez and Assistant Coach, Lindsey Lewis. |
