Timescapes: Three Discrete Chronicles

By Brittney Hansen

A journey through time awaits visitors to the Olive Hyde Art Gallery in Fremont when viewing "Timescapes: Three Discrete Chronicles." This exhibit is currently showing at the venerated gallery and will continue through Saturday, August 23. It features three distinctive views of time and change.

Helene Fischman, has revealed her vision of time through a camera's lens in varied locations throughout the world. Artist residence at historic and culturally significant locations in both Eastern Europe and the U.S. has resulted in a series of photographs capturing both timeworn and contemporary aspects of these places. An artist residency - living in an environment for an extended period - helps Helene tune into history the way an academic might by inspecting journals and first-hand documents.

Cybele Gerachis, who will be showing eight pieces, depicts cultural evolution through mixed media. Time is portrayed as memory, both fixed and fluid. Psychological and emotional perceptions embody time and space. Cybele's works explore forces that determine and shape these perceptions. Time and memory are symbolically represented by ethereal and dreamy images challenging the notion that time is progressive and linear.

Christopher Allen illustrates an urban landscape through his paintings. Seven years ago, Allen migrated to the East Bay and fell in love with the rugged industrial charms of West Oakland. He began working with the subject matter in his environment: industrial buildings, the Port of Oakland shipping cranes, the train station... The rapid conversion of this area to housing and luxury lofts has transformed his paintings from a portrait of the current environment to a nostalgic exercise capturing Oakland as it soon-to-be 'was.'

Timescapes is a revealing snapshot of time that provokes a personal examination of human experience. The substance and effect of this phenomenon seen through artistic expression will evoke a personal journey as well.
