Milpitas Rainbow Theatre presents Willy Wonka Junior

By Meenu Gupta

Milpitas Rainbow Theatre proudly presents Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Junior, sponsored by Milpitas Parks & Recreation Services. Willy Wonka is Roald Dahl's timeless story about a candy man who follows his quest to find an heir for his factory. He entices people to buy chocolate bars containing golden tickets to choose the winner. The story comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With a varied cast and numerous delightful songs, including: Pure Imagination; Golden Age of Chocolate; The Candy Man; I Eat More; Think Positive; song of factory workers Oompa-Loompa-Doompadee-Doofactory; Willy Wonka Junior will approximately run for 60-70 minutes. "The show is not only for kids but for people of all ages. There is singing and dancing. We are going to sell chocolate bars with golden tickets to pick a winner for the raffle prize," said Mei-Wan Chai, Assistant Director of Milpitas Rainbow Theatre.

A typical Rainbow Theatre season has four main stage shows a year. In addition to the main stage shows, Rainbow Theatre also produces one satellite show at a Milpitas Elementary school and offers a drama camp during the summer as well as mini-actor classes for 5-8 year olds during the summer. Auditions for main stage shows are open to youth ages 8-18. The exceptions are Teen productions (ages 12-18) and the summer musicals (ages 8-22). "While most of the participants are in elementary and middle school, older actors are also welcome," said Anne Kelly, Artistic Director. "Rainbow Theatre welcomes volunteers to help with shows, especially setting-up and tearing down the set, and providing dinner for the cast and crew during long tech week rehearsals." Any volunteers over the age of 18 need to have their fingerprints cleared by the City of Milpitas.

Willy Wonka marks the beginning of Kelly's 10th year with Rainbow Theatre, but is also her last show with Milpitas Rainbow Theatre as Artistic Director. Ms. Kelly has served as Artistic Director for Milpitas Rainbow Theatre since 1999 and is a member of Milpitas' Youth Program Team. Ms. Chai has been working at Rainbow Theatre since 1997, and Andy Hayes, Technical Director, who previously worked for Palo Alto Children's Theatre, has been with Rainbow Theatre since December 2006.

Selecting scripts can be a tricky process. Every show must be in keeping with Rainbow Theatre's two-fold mission statement: to provide a forum for youth to build self esteem through positive theatrical experience and to present quality, family-oriented entertainment for the community. "We have selected at least one show every season with a literary tie-in with the elementary school curriculum. With those parameters, and keeping in mind our demographic, the reading begins," said Kelly. Perusal scripts that look interesting are ordered, read, and a discussion takes place to determine which would be most suitable for the theatre, and eventually royalties of the show are chosen. This process is how Willy Wonka was chosen as the summer musical.
