Olympic Dreams Come True for Milpitas Resident
By Idorenyin Uto-Uko
The quest for the Olympics is one of hope, hardship, and heartache. But, for Milpitas resident Jennifer Joines, it is filled with happiness. On Wednesday July 16 it was announced that Jennifer Joines would be a member of the 2008 Women's Indoor Volleyball Team at this summers Olympics in Bejing, China.
Like many Olympic hopefuls, Joines felt a little nervous if she was going to be selected as one of the team members and was loosing sleep about the idea at the U.S. Training Facility in Colorado Springs, CO. She envisioned being selected to the team, and would later experience the same feeling.
"I had a dream that Diane (French, Technical Coordinator for USA Volleyball), called and said, "Guess what kiddo, you made it," Joines said. Then I woke up and realized it was only a dream. Then on Friday morning, Diane called and said "Guess what kiddo," you made it." It was like deja vu, I kept telling myself to wake up. This is only a dream."
Joines, a four-time All-American while at the University of Pacific in Stockton, CA could not have dreamed of a better collegiate career. She holds over ten school records, countless tournament and team awards.
She already has international volleyball experience. Early this year she participated in U.S, Olympic Team Exhibition in Brazil. She has also been a member of the United States Volleyball at the World Champion Championships in 2006 and the Pan American games while in college.
The ladies of USA Volleyball are in one of the most competitive brackets when they head into the Olympics August 9-23. They will be in the same division as Poland, Russia, and China. Each of these countries has provided Team USA stiff competition throughout the past few years.
Joines will not be the only native Californian on the team. She will be joined by Heather Brown (Yorba Linda), Tayyiba Haneef-Park (Laguna Hills) and Nicole Davis (Stockton).
USA Volleyball, based on input by U.S. Women's National Indoor Volleyball Head Coach "Jenny" Lang Ping and her coaching staff nominated the 12 players who will represent Team USA at the 2008 Olympics in August.
