Midnight release of the Final Book in Stephenie Meyer's acclaimed Twilight Series
By Ethan Chou
At long last, the highly anticipated fourth and final book of the Twilight series has arrived!
Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular novels culminate in Breaking Dawn, detailing the events surrounding the wedding of main character Isabella ("Bella") Swan to her boyfriend, Edward Cullen. As innocuous as it may seem, there is a catch; Edward and his family are actually vampires, albeit "vegetarians" who only drink animal blood.
Initially, Bella is torn between her attraction to this "god-like" being, in reference to his impossible good looks and physical prowess, and the constant danger that he poses to her. However, over time, the pair fall deeply in love and Edward protects Bella from a plethora of life-threatening situations, including another vampire coven, an army of vengeful creatures, and above all, his own near-irresistible attraction to her blood. Despite their mutual affection, their relationship experiences constant turbulence as Edward begins to fight to preserve his lover's safety and humanity, even as Bella has decided to become a vampire and reside with the Cullens.
Meyer skillfully blends fantasy with teenage romance and angst to create a compelling love story aimed at young adults. Simultaneously dealing with issues such as identity and the true nature of humanity, it is no wonder that the series has become as popular as it is.
At 12:01 a.m. on August 2nd, fans of Twilight can read the breath-taking conclusion of Bella's story at book stores all over the Tri-City area; Borders in Fremont and Union City are hosting midnight release parties to celebrate the latest Meyer work. Starting at 9:30 p.m., the Fremont branch will be conducting a trivia competition, debate, and costume and homemade T-shirt contest all focused on the novels. In addition, "Stereo Freakout" will be performing for the attendees and Twilight merchandise will be available for purchase; the Union City branch will be hosting similar events. Barnes and Nobles stores will be holding their own release party the day after, starting at 6:30 p.m. on August 3rd.
According to the assistant manager at Fremont Borders, "the series has become very popular, similar to Harry Potter. It has the ability to cross-over many generations. While the first audience remains teens... it attracts moms and women who work too."
There is certainly a lot of buzz over the book, especially in the wake of news that Summit Entertainment has just recently finished filming a movie version of the first novel in the series, Twilight. Starring Kristen Stewart (of Into the Wild) as Bella and Robert Pattinson (of Harry Potter fame) as her paramour Edward, the series is quickly growing in its appeal to a larger portion of the public. Indeed, Stephenie Meyer's immense success does in some ways resemble that of J.K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter series), leading many to hail it as the "new Harry Potter."
So get ready for the upcoming release of Breaking Dawn, one of the hottest young adult books on the market. If you have not already read the first three books of the series, pick up a copy today and get into Meyer's intense literary marvel. Just one bite of her imaginative work and you are certain to be captivated!
