Chabot College's Forensics Team Takes National Honors

(Hayward, CA) - Chabot College's Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team won two medals at the National Tournament in St. Charles, Illinois at its April event. A.S. Cobb won a Bronze Medal in Poetry Interpretation of Literature, and Randy Sao won a Bronze Medal in Prose Interpretation of Literature.

Sao and Cobb have been dominant forces in the northern California forensic circuit all year, bringing home nearly 20 medals combined.

In addition, A.S. Cobb won the Warren-Dahlin Fellowship Award. This student-voted award is given to the student who best exemplifies the 'spirit of the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament.' Cobb also won the award for top Community College Performer of Interpretation of Literature for the Northern California Forensics Association. This award is voted on by all the coaches of Community College programs in Northern California. This is the second year in a row a Chabot Student has won this award, as Barbara Tanner won it last year.

Finally, congratulations go out to the following students for their achievements: Frank Perry, for Northern California Forensics Association (NCFA) Platform Speaker of the Year, Two-year Division; and Randy Sao, NCFA Interpreter of the Year, Two-Year Division.

During this last year the Chabot College Speech and Debate team has won more than 50 individual awards and five team awards in seven tournaments. Chabot College has a State Champion in Jassmin Poyaoan who won a Gold Medal in Impromptu Speaking and a Bronze in Lincoln-Douglas Parliamentary Debate. Plus, the college took Second Place in the Community College Division at one of the largest tournaments on the West Coast.

National Medalists include: Frank Perry, Silver Medal, Persuasive Speaking; A.S. Cobb, Silver Medal, Poetry Interpretation of Literature; Randy Sao, Bronze Medal, Prose Interpretation of Literature; and Al Bungay, Bronze Medal, Prose Interpretation of Literature.

The following students are members of the Chabot College Speech and Debate team: Curtis Ballard, Martin Barker, Keisha Bledsoe, Al Bungay, Ben Carver, A.S. Cobb, Arthur Diaz, Ana HarenBayon Lee, Ruben Longoria, Shaun Nguyen, Adrienne Nicholson, Frank Perry, Ricky Ponce, Jassmin Poyaoan, Charli Prete, Nam Tran, and Eric White.

The Speech Team is supported by Jason Ames, Coach and Instructor, Speech/Forensics, Language Arts, Christine Warda, Instructor, Speech/Forensics, Language Arts, and Rob Boller, Speech Instructor, Language Arts.
