Ducks for Bucks Race at Lake Elizabeth
By Bosky Panjvani
Ducks and geese at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont will have a lot of company on Saturday, April 26. These interlopers will only be around for a short time but they will make a big splash helping local nonprofit groups to raise much needed funds and rewarding some lucky (one day) owners. The Kiwanis Club of Fremont is organizing its 14th Ducks for Bucks fundraiser event this year on Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. for the benefit of non-profit organizations. Entry to this event is free of charge and open to all. During the race, spectators can buy hotdogs, chips, cold drinks, and coffee.
Everyone can participate in the race by adopting rubber ducks, which carry identifying stickers. Hundreds of rubber duckies will float in the lake, encouraged to "swim" toward a "trap" in the lake by Fremont Fire Department hoses. The first duck to enter the trap will have a chance to win a brand new Chevy Malibu. The second prize is a trip for two to Las Vegas; successive prizes include floor covering from Signature worth $1,800, professional massages from Tereo Chiropractic, a diamond and gold pendant necklace worth $300, a dining package, and wardrobe clothing.
Ducks for Bucks festivities will also include a free kid's carnival sponsored by the Masonic Homes of California. Balloon twisting, face painting and games are some of the attractions for kids - they can cash game coupons for toys at the redemption booth. A Safe Moves City representative will also teach kids how to function safely on city streets during a mock city walk in Free Safe Moves City Kids Rodeo. The race, led by Lissa Kreisler from 94.5 KBAY Sam & Lissa Morning Show, will be broadcast live on Fremont's local radio station, 89.3 KOHL.
People interested in participating in the duck race can adopt a duck from any participating non-profit organization or online at the ducks4bucks website. The Kiwanis club expects to raise $35,000 this year for many local organizations who are busy handing out "adoption papers."
