Walking into Suju's Coffee and Tea in Fremont on Saturday, the aromatic smells of Guatemalan or Peruvian coffee beans fills the air. After ordering a Peruvian coffee and continuing on to the glass door, a group of people can be seen congregating around a large oval table. This is the new South Bay California Writer's Club.
Ten writers decided to launch the club. They unanimously voted to work toward becoming a branch of the California Writers' Club. "The California Writers' Club was founded in 1909 and there are 17 branches throughout the State of California," said Bob Garfinkle, member of the California Writers' Club and resident of Union City.
"I simply wanted all of you who have expressed an interest in a writers club for our area to know that we are underway. At this time, we have 35 names of people who want to belong to such a club. That is a fantastic start," Garfinkle told the group of writers.
As they move to become an official club, the following writers will serve as interim officers, until they hold elections in a few months. Garfinkle will serve as president, vice-president/programs will be Jeannine Vegh of Fremont, the secretary will be Lara Ervin of Newark, and LaTorre of Fremont will serve as treasurer.
The next Fremont writers' meeting will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at Suju's Coffee and Tea.
The next California Writers' Club Open Mic will be held on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m., in the Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Mowry in Fremont.
