Arctic Penguins of the Under-14/15 League won their first two games of the season, defeating Vortex, 2-1, on Thursday, March 13, and Rice Krispies, 2-0, on Saturday, March 15. Penguins out shot the Vortex 15-3 but had trouble converting the shots for scores. Erika Becerra snapped a 1-1 tie on a direct kick midway through the second half for the game winner.

The first Penguins score came on an own goal when Becerra's corner kick bounced off a Vortex defender and across the goal mouth. After the Penguins went ahead, goalie Sara Hearn came up big; first, stopping a shot off a breakaway then another shot after a rebound. Dani Cope, Nicole Byrnes, Kylie Stoeppel and Vanessa Barrera also had shots on goal for the winners.

In the win against Rice Krispies, Barrera scored both goals as the Penguins played their first game on the new artificial surface field at Irvington Community Center. LeeAnn Rust and Ashley Renaud played well on defense for the Penguins while Janani Ravikrishnan had a shot on goal that just missed.

Under-12 Icebirds opened their season on Tuesday, March 11, with a 1-1 tie against the Sharks. Ashley Campbell scored the Icebirds' goal on an assist from Amy deLanda. Elena Strom and Monica Dunn had shots on goal while Eva Liu played well on defense.
