Annual compost giveaways
By Bosky Panjvani
Compost is decomposed and partially decomposed organic matter (leaves, grass clippings, dead plants) used to enrich soil by increasing its water-holding capacity and provide a nutrient source.
Composting is a simple, inexpensive process that reduces the production of leachate and methane gas, conserves landfill space waste, and reduces the weight and volume of organic waste. When used in gardens, it acts as a sort of fertilizer to the plants.
On Saturday, April 5, two free bags of compost will be given to Fremont and Milpitas residents by Allied Waste Services.
Allied Waste Services, City of Fremont's garbage and recycling collection contractor for Residential and Non-Residential Services is giving away two free bags of compost on Saturday, April 5 from 8 a.m. - noon, while supplies last. Fremont residents who have been actively contributing to the curbside organics program are required to bring in their latest Allied Waste bill to receive two free bags of compost.
Stephanie Saenz of Allied Waste Services stated, "It is for single-family houses in Fremont. The residential organics program requires Fremont single house residents to pay for the green carts to dispose off-yard waste and food scrap on a weekly basis to Allied Waste Services," said Saenz. This has turned into rich compost for lawns and gardens.
"Allied Waste Services gives free compost to Fremont residents once every year as a gesture of gratitude to the citizens who have been participating in the compost program," she added. The curbside organics program has been conducted in Fremont since 2003, wherein the citizens began giving away their green waste to Allied Waste Services.
