Crazy for You
By Praveena Raman
George and Ira Gershwin's musical comedy, "Crazy for You," opens at Mission San Jose High School's (MSJHS) Little Theatre on Thursday March 6, and runs through March 15. Presented by the Universal Performers "Crazy for You" is directed by student director Aura Aguilar and Anne Riley, Director of the Performing Arts Department at MSJHS.
Set in the 1930s, this romantic comedy revolves around Bobby Child (Drew Williams) a well-to-do stage-struck playboy from the East who comes west to Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theatre and Polly Baker (Beatrice Crosbie), the daughter of the theatre owner. This high energy tap musical has a plot filled with hilarious twists and misunderstandings and show-stopping classic Gershwin songs such as "Embraceable You", "I got Rhythm" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." "I have done all the musicals but this fourth one has a lot of dancing, together with singing and requires a lot of energy from all of us" says Beatrice, a senior at MSJHS. "The entire cast is working very hard and with long hours at rehearsals," adds Drew.
This particular season is also marked with milestones for two of Mission's alumnae, Lee Glover and Spencer Williams. This will be Chorale and Vocal Director Lee Glover's last musical at Mission. Lee will be retiring at the end of this year after 33 years of teaching at her Alma Mater. "I am glad to be doing a show that I really love and am comfortable with and that has also meant a lot to me over the years. It is like greeting an old friend." She adds, "I am also happy that the kids are enjoying these old songs and doing their very best. The cowboy trio is doing a great job coming together as a unit and singing the harmony in the Barbershop pieces. The girls' sextets too are enthusiastic and good musicians. The pairing of Bobby Child (Drew Williams) and Bela Zangler (Mathew Lee) and their number together should be a standout in the show."
For Spencer Williams, returning to Fremont and MSJHS after ten years and choreographing a musical seems a bit surreal. His enthusiasm in choreographing the dance numbers has been very infectious and he has been able to convert non-dancers into dance lovers. "The students have worked very hard on the choreography and I'm super impressed with their attitudes to try new things, as well as their determination to make it the very best they can!" says Spencer. While Drew mentions "This is a huge leap from anything I have done before. I have learned a lot of tap dancing from Spencer for this show and now love it so much that I want to take it in college."
"Crazy for You" will be performed with a live student orchestra under the direction of Orchestra Director, Monica Kraft.
