Ohlone College baseball under new leadership

By Biff Jones

Ohlone College's baseball program is under the leadership of first year head coach Tom Kunis. Kunis comes to Ohlone from Stanford where he was the pitching coach for eight years and tutored several Cardinal players before they moved on to professional baseball and the major leagues.

Kunis also brings the Stanford way of developing student athletes in that to become a good college athlete, you have to first become a good college student. Coach Kunis has already raised the Baseball Team's GPA (Grade Point Average) from 2.6 last spring to 3.1 overall this past fall.

After Mother Nature won the first two games of the year because of rainouts, the Renegades finally took the field on the road against San Mateo, ranked sixth in the state, and lost 8-0. Ohlone Baseball followed with three more losses in its next four games to start the season 1-4. The next three games saw the Renegades win 18-1, lose 17-6 and win 14-3 before getting a rematch, this time at home, against ranked San Mateo. It took six Ohlone pitchers, but they got the job done as the Renegades upset the Bulldogs, 2-1, to improve their record to 4-5.

The team traveled to So Cal last weekend for a three game tournament against Hancock, Oxnard and Cuesta Community Colleges. Results of the games were not available at press time. Next up for Ohlone is a home game on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. against Diablo Valley College of Pleasant Hill on the Ohlone Campus.

Ohlone is a member of the Coast Conference South Division. Other members are Chabot of Hayward, Gavilan of Gilroy, Hartnell of Salinas, Mission of Santa Clara, Monterey Peninsula of Monterey, San Jose City and West Valley of Saratoga.

Coach Kunis' staff consists of recruiting coordinator and head assistant and batting coach, Jordan Twohig (first year), infield and third base coach, Eric Kahoalii (10th year), catching assistant, Chris Dvorak (first year), bull pen and pitching assistant Ken Bloom (first year) and outfield and bench coach, Jeff Walker (second year).

This year's Renegade roster with local ties include sophomores Nick Caravelli, Nick Colvin, Joe Gardner (Milpitas High), Andrew Ham (Washington High of Fremont), Matt Langseth, Justin Lunday (Irvington of Fremont), Jeff Lusk, Rich McDowell, Shane Murchison (Irvington), Kurtis Sherer, Zach Townsend (American of Fremont), Michael Vandenbusch (American), and freshmen Mike Annino, Daniel Buffington, Scott Camacho, Cole Campana (American), Jake Chairez (Washington), Aaron Chavez (Milpitas), Chris Doble, Ryan Harmon (Fremont resident), Cory Krisman, Ian Hoff, Sean Henning (Washington), LA Idakoji (Newark Memorial), Ryan Kanzaki, David Keller, David Luna, Braxton Miller, George Peters (Washington), Aaron Plimmer, Kevin Radach (Mission San Jose High), Kevin Sherer and Adam Zuniga (Milpitas).

Come out and support your Renegade's Baseball. Admission is free for all regular season games.
