Lady Renegades start season 5-1

By Biff Jones

After losing its first two games of the season to Mother Nature because of rain-outs, the Ohlone College Women's Softball Team opened the real season with wins in a non-conference double-header on the road in Fresno. They defeated San Joaquin Delta of Stockton, 11-0 in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule (an eight run or more lead after five or six innings), then beat host Fresno City College, 8-4.

This year's version of Renegade softball has six returning sophomores from last year's team and nine new freshmen plus a red-shirt freshman who will practice with the team but not play this year. Student/athletes and their previous school attended follow.

Sophomores: Danielle Cameron, Castro Valley; Cassandra Ortega, Grace Davis of Modesto; Katrina Roman, James Logan of Union City; Danielle Sommer, California High of San Ramon; Kassandra Winger, Livermore, and Danielle Yee, Milpitas.

Freshman: Danielle Bolander, Hayward; Kim Cawley, Milpitas, Kelly Colker, Newark Memorial, Sarah Lawrence, California High; Brittany Lenz, Amador Valley of Pleasanton; Jamie Miller, Granada of Livermore, Desiree Sanchez, Logan; Desiree Springs, Irvington of Fremont; and Kathryn Sumner, Washington of Fremont.

So far this year, the pitching has been in the hands of freshmen Lawrence and Colker, and sophomore Yee, with Colker being the workhorse of the staff. Leading hitters to date have been Cawley, Miller and Winger.

Leading the Lady Renegades are Head Coach, Donna Runyon, Assistant Coaches, Augie Gonsalez and Gabe Ontiveros and Score Keeper Cheryl Kato.

Coach Runyon, will be trying for her sixth straight Coast Conference North (CCN) outright win or tie for the league championship. Other teams in CCN are Chabot of Hayward, City College of San Francisco (CCSF), De Anza of Cupertino, Foothill of Los Altos Hills, Mission of Santa Clara and San Mateo. Coast Conference South (CCS) includes Cabrillo of Aptos, Gavilan of Gilroy, Hartnell of Salinas, Monterey Peninsula, San Jose City (SJC) and West Valley of Saratoga.

Lady Renegades opened home and league play with a 14-2, five inning victory over De Anza followed by a hard fought 2-1 home win against CCSF. Saturday, Feb. 9, they played another road double header, this time in Sacramento. Ohlone defeated American River 11-1 in five innings and took their first loss of the year against CCS rival SJC, 5-4, in a non-conference game.

After playing Mission Tuesday, Feb. 12 (result not available at press time), the Renegades play their first road conference game on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. when they face Chabot. This year, all of Chabot's home games will be played on the campus of Cal State University East Bay (CSUEB).

Come out and cheer on your favorite local community college teams, Ohlone and Chabot. For more information, call Ohlone College at (510) 659-6000.
