January 23, 2008 > Big Trees
Submitted By Al Minard
Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) wrote, "I think I shall never see / a poem lovely as a tree." The state of California lists 317 big trees, of which 104 are National Champions and 34 are National Co-Champions. Washington Township has 29 of the 317 trees and of those one is a National Champion and one is a National Co-Champion. Washington Township Historical Society will be discussing these trees, what they look like, where they are and how to measure and submit a tree. The speaker is Nelson Kirk who has submitted thirteen of these trees. No other city in the State has as many big trees as Fremont.
Washington Township Historical Society meets Monday, January 28, 2008, at the Museum of Local History, 190 Anza Street in the Mission San Jose District. The meeting starts at 7:15 with a short business meeting and then the featured speaker at about 7:45. Our meeting on January 28 will feature Nelson Kirk and Hugh Danaher. Hugh has put the Big Tree list on the Museum of Local History Website. There is no fee to this event, but you are welcome to join the Washington Township Historical Society, which entitles you to a bi-monthly newsletter.
