88-year-old grandfather to star in British ballet

LONDON (AP), Jan 12 _ An 88-year-old retired man has been perfecting his pirouettes ahead of his debut role in Prokofiev's ``The Stone Flower'' Sunday.

John Lowe, a grandfather of 11, began ballet dancing nine years ago after his daughter became a professional dancer. He is scheduled to perform in the Russian composer's final ballet at The Maltings theater in Ely, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of London.

``There's nothing effeminate about it _ you have to be incredibly fit to dance,'' Lowe said, adding that he practices daily.

``It's a wonderful feeling. I had always wanted to dance and it's never too late to learn.''
