Health Care Reform - is this a good idea?

There is much debate over health care reform and how it should be structured. A series of seminars and discussions have been scheduled to help make sense of confusing statistics and conflicting attitudes. Claims and counterclaims about universal healthcare and alternative systems are confounding for even for the most astute observer, so what is the public to believe?

Health is not an abstract idea, it affects everyone. Changes in current methods of delivering health care represent a significant shift in our lives. In order to address the many facets of this issue, Washington Hospital has invited medical care experts and government leaders to discuss and debate health care reform. All discussions are open to the public and free of charge.

Tuesday, January 15
6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
John Kitzhaber, M.D., former emergency room physician, legislator and 2-term Governor State of Oregon will discuss health care reform. He has been an active leader in health care issues. A Q&A session will follow Dr. Kitzhaber's comments.

Wednesday, January 16
6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Moderated by the League of Women Voters, State Senator Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro), State Assembly Member Alberto Torrico (D-Newark) and Anmol Mahal, M.D., Immediate Past President of the California Medical Association will be joined by special guest Herb Schultz, Senior Health Policy Advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.


Congressional view of health care reform
Friday, January 18
6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Congressman Pete Stark (D-Fremont) will share his views on Medicare reform. A senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, Stark currently chairs its Health Subcommittee. Dan Morgan, M.D., Co-Chair of Washington Hospital Bio-Ethics Committee will speak about single-payer initiatives. A Q&A session will follow this program.
