Eon Coffee, located in Hayward, offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life where people can relax and enjoy live music in a soothing environment. This warmly decorated cafe features diverse entertainment including belly dance, spoken word, poetry and live music of all types. Typically featured on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, co-owner Liz Buergi keeps the schedule flexible. For example, Thursday, Nov. 29, will feature acoustic rock by Anthony Savedra from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Live entertainment isn't the only thing that makes Eon Coffee unique. Owners Liz Buergi and Yoshi Nozawa have created a menu with a focus on healthy, tasty options. For example, the cafˇ serves mulberry tea and pastries made with mulberry powder.
"Mulberry has been proven to significantly lower blood sugar," Buergi stated. A new menu option that is proving to be a customer favorite is the Mulberry Cheesecake.
Also featured are salads and sandwiches enriched with krill - tiny, shrimp-like creatures -that are the main diet staple of baleen whales and other sea creatures. Krill is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, essential for reenergizing cells in the body. Patrons with a sweet tooth favor the Omega-3 Krill Cookie.
Even the water used to brew beverages at Eon Coffee has an antioxidant component. All drinks are made with Pi water, which, according to the Eon Coffee Web site "...was recently discovered in Japan and through various experiments, is found to have health improving characteristics. Pi water helps strengthen your immune system, increases mental alertness and leads you to a state of better relaxation."
Eon Coffee first opened two years ago as Eon Cafˇ. It recently changed its name to Eon Coffee, as Buergi and Nozawa focus on the science of making fabulous coffee. "We are now roasting our own beans," Buergi said. They hope to distribute their coffee through retail stores soon. These two friends, who met when they worked together at a company that makes table-top water fountains, shared a dream to open a business. In November 2005, they realized that dream when Eon Cafˇ opened in a converted Elks Hall across from Chabot College.
Starting mid-December, Eon Coffee will be holding "open mic" nights every other Friday. Entertainers who would like to be on the performance schedule can contact Eon Coffee via email at Lattelove@eoncafe.com or by phone at (510) 264-0507. Soon performers will be able to sign up on Eon's Web site at www.eoncafe.com.
